How to resolve Excel error “MS Office Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action"

It is not uncommon to receive error messages in Excel. Sometime these error messages are so strange and weird that it becomes very difficult to understand them. Today I will talk about one such error in Excel.

“MS Office Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action.”

The above error may occur when you try to open your Excel sheet. There are three main reasons for the occurrence of this error:
  • This error may occur when you use 'Send as Attachment' option of Excel to send the Excel sheet as an email attachment.
  • If Excel is trying to access data from an active application.
  • You have added too many add-ins in your application.

Methods to resolve the error:

Use a different email program to send your Excel sheet as an attachment: You can try to send your Excel sheet using 'Send Using Email' option in Excel. If you still encounter above error then you can send your Excel sheet by following methods:
  1. Attach your file using MS Outlook.
  2. Send your Excel sheet using Hotmail.
Close all the programs that are interacting with your Excel: This error may encounter if Excel is interacting or accessing data with other application and that application is inactive. In this case it is recommended to close Excel and other application and again reopen your Excel. If error is still occurring then you need to enable the 'Ignore other applications that use DDE' feature. Follow below steps to do this:
For Excel 2010:
  1. Open your Excel sheet.
  2. Go to File-> Options.
  3. Go to Advanced tab and click 'Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)' in the General area.
For Excel 2007:
  1. Go to MS Office button-> Excel Options.
  2. Go to Advanced tab and click 'Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)' in the General area.
Disable the add-ins temporarily: The above error may also occur if your system has too many add-ins and one of the add-ins is corrupt. So disable all add-ins temporarily and see if error occurs. Follow below steps to disable add-ins:
  1. Open your Excel file.
  2. Go to File-> Options-> Add-ins.
  3. Now click Manage Box-> Excel Add-ins-> Go.
  4. Clear the checkbox next to each add-ins in the Add-ins available box.
If after performing above steps error does not occur then add the add-ins one by one until the problem occurs again.
