How to solve QuickBooks error -6073, -99001?

Sometimes when you try yo open your QuickBooks company file (.qbw) in multi user mode you face certain accessibility issues. A common error message you may encounter in similar situation is:

Error: -6073, -99001: QuickBooks is unable to open this company file.”

What cause this problem? This error generally occurs because of the following three reasons:
  1. QuickBooks file is open in single user mode on the machine hosting the file.
  2. QuickBooks company file is located in a network folder with permission set to read only.
  3. When more than one set of login credentials are being used to access the shared folder on the Linux server.  
How to solve?

Use QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic tool: QuickBooks error that occurs while working in multi user mode are hard to find and correct. Therefore it is recommended to use QuickBooks Connection Diagnostic tool which is designed to fix networking and multi user errors that may occurs when you try to open your company file. If this tool does not work for you then try following solutions.

If the company file is open in single user mode on the machine hosting the file then follow below steps to fix the problem:

For QuickBooks 2006:
  1. Open QuickBooks, go to File-> Close Company.
  2. Select Open an existing company from No Company Open window. 
  3. Now select company file from the Company File list.
  4. Click the checkbox of Open file in multi-user mode and click the open button.
  5. Now sign in your account.
For QuickBooks 2007 & later versions:
  1. Open QuickBooks, go to File-> Close Company.
  2. Select Open or restore an existing company from No Company Open Window.
  3. Select Open a company file and click Next button.
  4. Now select the company file from Company Files List.   
  5. Click the checkbox of Open file in multi-user mode and click the open button.
  6. Now sign in your account.
If QuickBooks company file is located in a network folder with permission set to read only then follow following steps:
  1. Go to the computer hosting the company data file.
  2. Open Window explorer and search the folder in which your company file is stored.
  3. Now right click the folder containing your company file and select Properties-> Security tab.
  4. Click the name of group or user to change the permission.
  5. Check the Allow check box for Full Control for the user that needs access to the QuickBooks file and click Apply.
